The right footwear will give you what you need for a successful walking workout.

Before you set one foot out the door to start your new walking program, you need to have the right footwear. What should you look for in a walking shoe? Check out these four tips from the American Walking Association (AWA).

1. Before you put on the shoe, check for flexibility. The shoe should bend at the ball, not just the toe, of the foot. If you can't bend the forefoot of the shoe with your hand, walk away from it.

2. Look at the heel of the walking shoe. It should be beveled (not flared) where it touches the ground, which offers support and assistance when pushing off.

3. When you try on a pair of shoes in the store, walk around to ensure that your heel doesn't slip. This constant friction is the surest road to blisters. Also, make sure the end of your shoe and the end of your big toe are thumb's-width apart, and that there is enough room along your forefoot so there's no pressure on the sides of your feet.

4. According to the AWA, leather is an excellent fabric for shoes because it wears well and breathes. Which brands are best? The AWA recommends walking or light running shoes by Asics, New Balance, Saucony and Adidas.
