A Nighttime Run Might Not Be a Bad Idea After All Print E-mail

You feel like taking a moonlight run, but are afraid it will keep you too revved up for sleep? Not to worry.

Doomsayers used to warn that jogging late at night would keep you awake into the wee hours. However, new evidence suggests the experts may have steered us wrong. In fact, some studies indicate that running late at night may alleviate the stress you've built up all day, thereby allowing you to sleep better. Another benefit to exercising in the evening is that your muscles are warmer and more flexible than they are when you first wake.

How can you determine when you should be working out? Some experts claim that body temperature seems to be the best indicator of the optimum time to hit the road; you are likely to have stronger workouts when your body temperature is at its highest and may experience less productive sessions when your temperature is lower. If you can't be bothered to monitor your temperature, just pay attention to the energy ebb and flow you experience throughout the day, and plan your fitness routine for the periods when you're feeling your most chipper. If that means a workout after dark, go for it.
