Court Smarts: How Young Is Too Young? Print E-mail
Written by Diet Detective Editorial Staff
Tennis expert Vic Braden has the scoop on your toughest court questions.

Question: What is the best age to start a child in tennis?

Vic's Answer: There is no perfect age to start playing tennis. The major variable is the interest of the child. Some kids love to swing at a tennis ball at age 2. Other children may have no interest at age 13.

The two key factors to consider when starting a child is to have the time spent be "fun" and the exercises match the age and ability level of the child. For example, some very young children might be started in the game by hitting a "nerf" ball, or balloons, for only three to five minutes. Tracy Austin was well on her way to becoming a star at age 6, and she's still playing in tournaments while raising two children.

Question: How much water should I drink before a match?

Vic's Answer: Dr. Steven Pratt suggests you drink enough water to feel slightly sluggish. But don't worry, because you will use it up quickly and will still need to drink more on each changeover. Remember, where drinking water is concerned, you can't play catch-up once you get behind.

Question: I see some players practicing their strokes without a ball before a match. Does that help?

Vic's Answer: Some players swear by this exercise. Swinging and visualizing a match situation seems to help some athletes. But motor learning experts will normally suggest that such exercises have limitations, as they don't simulate actual match conditions.

Question: How do I choose the right racquet for me?

Vic's Answer: Don't forget to demo racquets. The oscillations that are emitted from a racquet affect each person's arm a little differently. Thus, hit with several different models, and the one that ultimately feels best to you is the one you should consider buying.
