Q&A: To Squeeze or Not To Squeeze... Print E-mail
Written by Diet Detective Editorial Staff
I know that it is important to include fruits in your diet... but I happen to love juice. Is drinking juice just as good as eating fruit?

No. While 100% juice (the only kind you should drink) is full of vitamins, it is also pure sugar - all natural fruit sugar, but still sugar.

Think about it: Maybe 5 or 6 oranges had to be squeezed to make one glass of juice - so you're getting the sugar from all those oranges.

When juice is made, all of the pulp or skin is left behind. The pulp and skin of any fruit are the largest sources of fiber and nutrients. Thus, it is actually better to eat an orange rather than drink its juice. Plus, research tells us that liquids do not fill us up the same way solid food does... so you will feel more satisfied after eating a piece of fruit than drinking juice.

Limit your consumption of juice and try mixing it with carbonated water or seltzer. It's just as refreshing as a glass of juice and has a lot less calories. For example: Instead of 8 oz juice (120 calories), try 5 oz seltzer and 3 oz juice (45 calories) for a savings of 75 calories. If you are used to drinking 8 oz of orange juice everyday, this small change will save you 525 calories per week.
