Q&A: Are You Nuts? Print E-mail
Written by Diet Detective Editorial Staff
Q: I really enjoy nuts but have read that they are fattening and should be avoided. Is this true?

A: It is true that nuts are high in calories and fat. However, most nuts are low in saturated fat ("bad") and high in unsaturated fat with zero cholesterol. In addition nuts are a good source of protein and fiber.

What does all this mean?

It means that nuts are not only "heart-healthy" but can be part of any healthy meal plan. In small portions, nuts add flavor and satisfaction to meals or snacks. Just remember to go easy...try adding a small handful to salads or chicken dishes instead of snacking right from the bag. Be especially cautious of portion size with nuts that are higher in saturated fat such as macadamia and Brazil nuts.
