Charles Stuart Platkin
Hello. My name is Charles Stuart Platkin, I’m the founder of DietDetective.com, I have a syndicated column that’s in more than 165 daily papers, I’ve also written 4 books on health and behavior. As far as academic background: I received my undergraduate degree from Cornell University, a Juris Doctorate from Fordham University, and a Masters in Public Health from Florida International University. I’m also a certified personal trainer and I’m currently completing my Ph.D. in Public Health.  Ok. A few points, just so we’re clear.  This blog will NOT be investigative stories, or well written, heavily edited articles. It will be from my mind, to key board, to computer. There WILL be typos, grammatical errors, and run on sentences. But that’s fine, because you’ll get the point.

I really think this is a true travesty that this drug was put in the hands of the American people. It’s bad enough that the FDA allows all those unhealthy and potentially dangerous weight-loss supplements – Now they’re letting this ridiculous drug be sold OTC. You have to be kidding me. This stuff has such terrible side effects, and without serious behavioral counseling and the help of a professional, there will BE NO LONG TERM WEIGHT LOSS. Even the best case scenario is only a 5% weight loss. And the research studies that support this weight loss all include behavioral counseling. They think a few booklets are gonna count as behavioral counseling? What drugs is Glaxo taking that are giving them the confidence to believe that this is really gonna actually work? Oh right—they don’t care whether it works or not. And why do they think that they’re gonna do better than Roche, who spent a fortune trying to market this and make it work via prescription? Check out the NY Daily News

So Enviga (the new energy drink by Coca-Cola and Nestle—both such fine healthy living companies—even though Nestle does own Jenny Craig) came out with a statement standing by their claims that the drink burns calories. Check out USA Today.  The truth is I hate even writing about the product because it probably helps them sell more drinks—in fact—I’m sure their marketing people anticipated and hoped for this type of controversy. But it’s still important for the readers of this site to know—this will not help you lose weight, it’s not what you’re thinking.

I read this really interesting editorial in the Chicago Tribune where the writer actually states that we should have prospective restaurant diners prove they’re under a certain BMI before they’re allowed to order certain higher calorie items.  Well isn’t that something?! What a thought. This is based on the concept that Chicago is considering like NY, putting cal info on menu boards.
