Breathing Can Make or Break Your Workout Print E-mail

Breathing right while you lift is not only healthy, it may help you lift more.

Strangely, many people have the tendency to hold their breath when they work out-just when they need oxygen the most. Remembering to breathe at the right time and in the proper way can help unlock your body's potential.

Weight lifters who know their stuff will tell you that you can use your breath to perform the muscle contractions associated with lifting. On the harder part of the motion, exhale as you push or pull on the weight. When you relax the weight during the easier part of the repetition, inhale as you release the weight.

Using this breathing method will not only make you feel stronger but also allow you to lift more weight. More importantly, though, correct breathing will help you avoid raising your blood pressure to a dangerous level, and keep you from developing headaches, dizziness or even fainting.
