Weight machines can be a little intimidating to newcomers. But by following instructions and heeding these pointers, it's easy to demystify equipment that's new to you.

Learn how to adjust each machine to fit your body.
If you're using equipment positioned for another person's size, your muscles won't get a workout; instead you'll risk injuring your back and joints.

Maintain good form.
No matter what machine you're using, don't arch or round your back, keep your shoulders down and relaxed, and don't hyperextend arms or legs.

Don't be a stranger.
Get to know the names of each exercise and understand what muscles you're working. If you're uncertain about this information, ask a professional at the gym. Trainers can explain where you should be feeling each exercise if you're performing it correctly.
