Weight Training Can Mean a Healthier Pregnancy Being pregnant doesn't mean you need to take a nine-month hiatus from weight training. In fact, experts say that weight training can make your pregnancy a healthier one.

Back strength is essential when you're pregnant, because as your belly gets bigger, your back has to support the extra weight.

Upper and lower back exercises, such as lat pulldowns and rows, can increase back strength, keep your spine in alignment and decrease back pain too.

As your pregnancy progresses, you should pay attention to your body's changing limitations and modify your exercise regimen accordingly. For example, after your first trimester, you should avoid doing exercises while lying on your back, because you may experience dizziness.

Talk to your doctor about what kind of weight training moves you can do and how far into your pregnancy you can do them, and join a prenatal exercise class to learn more about the general dos and don'ts of weight training during different stages of your pregnancy.
