Treat Injuries With Ice When you experience an injury, it's essential that you attend to it immediately. Whether it happens at the gym or on a bike trail in the wilderness, you should head home as fast as you can and ice it.

Although at one time the belief was that injury treatment called for heat, the conventional wisdom now says that ice is more effective at reducing pain and swelling.

Ice constricts blood vessels, making it more difficult for blood to flow to the area-keeping swelling to a minimum-while heat, which improves circulation, does the opposite.

When you're applying ice, wrap the ice in a cloth or paper towel to protect your skin. Apply the ice pack to the injured area for about 15 minutes at a time, four to five times a day. And remember, the sooner you begin icing after an injury occurs, the better you'll be able to limit the swelling.
