Weight work improves performance in almost any sport.

If you've avoided strengthening certain muscles because you're afraid an increase in muscle mass will interfere with your cycling or running, cast your worries aside. Sport-specific weight training can lead to a better workout when it comes to almost any sport.

In fact, experts say the added strength will not only not slow you down, but it will likely improve your performance by giving you a power and endurance boost. If you're a mountain biker, for example, muscle growth in your quadriceps will help you climb hills, not hinder your pedaling motion. If you're a runner and strengthen your calves, quadriceps and glutes through weight training, you can experience increases in speed without worrying that the added muscle mass will ruin your aerodynamic form. Not to mention that strengthening the muscles you use most in running and cycling is an investment in injury prevention.
