FitTip: Don’t Let Being Overweight Keep You From Weight Training The myth that you have to lose weight to strength-train is just that—a myth.

If you're carrying a few extra pounds and are ready to embark on a weight-loss plan, strength training with weights is a great place to start. Ignore the myth that says you need to shed some weight before you can begin strength training-it couldn't be further from the truth.

Weight loss requires you to follow a sensible diet and engage in cardiovascular exercise in conjunction with weight training. Why? Because while cardio activities burn fat and help you stay on the winning end of the calories-consumed-versus-calories-burned game, lifting weights builds muscle, and the more muscle mass your body has, the more calories you'll burn, even at rest, which ultimately allows your body to be more efficient about burning however many calories you consume.
