FitTip: Don’t Jerk While Lifting Weights Print E-mail

Even though you may be pressed for time these days, that's no excuse to plow through your strength training regimen. Doing the moves slowly and using proper form is always the safest, smartest way to work out. When you lift and lower a weight too quickly, you may be using the momentum, rather than your muscles, to do the exercise. Plus, any kind of rocking motion can set you up for muscle and joint injuries. To make the most of your routine, take two seconds to lift the weight and four seconds to lower the weight back down. Always keep the motion slow and controlled.

So true! I have been lifting weights for fourteen years and nothing is more dangerous than throwing weights around too quick; especially in wrong form. Slow, smooth, concentrated movements produce greater results than believed. Usually too much weight is another misconception. You do not have to use heavy weight for results as long as form is the primary focus; the rest comes naturally.
