FitTip: Stop Lower Back Pain with Stronger Abs Doing nothing can make matters worse. Instead, build strength — and not just in your back.

If you have a history of lower back pain, and you think you need to take it easy, think again. Inactivity can often make matters worse. The best investment you can make in a healthy back is building strength in these muscles as well as their opposing ones, your abdominals.

While many people know that firming up the abs is a key to relieving back pain, most don't know that low-back exercises are also essential to the equation. You may have been told that if you work the problem area you risk doing further harm, but, in fact, a muscle imbalance creates its own potential for injury. What's more, if your abs become stronger than your lower back, it could have a detrimental affect on your posture, which could then lead to further back troubles.
