FitTip: Correct Form Equals Fewer Falls on the Slopes Print E-mail

Proper skiing form will save your tush from pain.

As a beginner skier your natural tendency will be to lean back to be prepared to fall on your rear. This is bad form and can lead to more injuries if it's not corrected. The correct form is to lean slightly forward with your knees bent and your poles up and out in front of your body. This not only puts your center of gravity in the right place but also allows the edges of your skis to cut through the snow and provide support. What's more, correct form will allow you to feel more comfortable and confident on the slopes. It's easy to lean back when heading down your favorite run, but visualize the correct stance and feel the difference. Try this test while standing in the lift line: Lean back in your boots and watch the front of your skis lift up slightly. Now bend your knees and lean just to the front of center and watch as your skis plant firmly in the snow. Take your time and a few lessons, and you'll get the hang of it.
