Three danger signs you didn't drink enough water before you ran. Everyone knows it's important to drink water after a run, but how much should you drink before and after to stay well hydrated? Experts say you need 16 ounces of water two hours before you run and 8 to16 ounces 30 to 60 minutes beforehand as well. If you plan to be on the road or trail for an hour or less, that should be sufficient. But different bodies have different needs, and you should pay attention to the signs that you may be becoming dehydrated during your run. Watch for overheating (which can be signaled by nausea, cramping and dizziness), cramps or excessive thirst. Afterward, a major telltale sign of dehydration is the color of your urine; if it's anything other than clear or pale yellow, you're dehydrated and should increase your water intake before running.
