How to get the most out of going nowhere.

Running on a treadmill takes a little skill. To get the best results from your treadmill workout, remember these don'ts:

Don't stare at your feet or the belt. Not only can this lead to upper-back and neck pain, it can make you dizzy and disoriented. Keep your head lifted, eyes focused straight ahead and abs tightened.

Don't clench your fists. To avoid this, pretend you're holding berries or eggs in each hand. You don't want to drop them, but you also don't want to crush them.

Don't lift your feet too high. If you do, you'll place extra stress on your hips, knees and ankles. On the other hand, you should take care not to shuffle.

Don't increase your mileage more than 10 percent each week. Adding challenges gradually is the best way to prevent injury and burnout, say the pros.
