Many women suffer from this condition, but most don't know anything about it. Are you finding yourself still battling the skin breakouts of your teenage years? Have you recently put on a lot of weight? Do you have excessive hair in places you don't want it - like on your chin - and not enough on your head?

You could be one of hundreds of women who suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome. This cluster of symptoms afflicts about 5-10% of all women in their childbearing years. Each case varies, and not everyone with PCOS has the characteristic ovarian cysts for which the syndrome is named. And, despite the name of the disorder, women without ovarian cysts may also suffer from PCOS.

PCOS is a condition that affects a woman's hormonal balance, including insulin and some sex hormones. Once thought to be an annoying but harmless condition, PCOS has recently been linked to higher rates of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. It's also been found to be the number one cause of infertility in women.

The general features of PCOS include:

Irregular periods
Hirsutism (excess hair)
Thinning scalp hair
Acne
Weight gain
Difficulties conceiving a child

So if you show any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor about getting tested for PCOS.
