Weight Control for Diabetes Print E-mail

One of the first things your doctor may have said when you were diagnosed with diabetes is to lose weight. Why is this so important?

Losing weight provides two benefits to people with type 2 diabetes. First of all, losing weight makes your cells more receptive to the insulin that is circulating in your blood.

Therefore, the cells are able to take up more of the sugar from your bloodstream, which keeps your blood sugar under better control. You may be able to take lower dosages of medication as a result, or perhaps even get off the medication completely (as you continue to carefully monitor your diet and exercise, of course!). Even losing as little as 5 or 10% of your current body weight may produce these positive effects.

Secondly, losing weight may reduce your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. People with diabetes are at higher risk of heart disease, so decreasing these other risk factors improves their overall health.

Even if you do not have diabetes, you should strive to maintain a healthy body weight since being overweight is one of the risk factors for this disease.
