Like other unsaturated oils (such as olive or canola), flaxseed oil may lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) levels, thus reducing your risk of heart disease. Flaxseed also has been touted to relieve constipation, as well as fight the painful inflammation of arthritis. There has also been some research that suggests the type of fiber contained in flaxseeds (lignans) may fight certain types of cancers. Lignans are not found naturally in flaxseed oil, but many manufacturers add it. So flaxseed oil can indeed be a welcome addition to a healthy eating plan. One point to remember: flaxseed oil is still an oil. All oils have about 120 calories and 14 grams of fat per tablespoon. Therefore, no matter how good flaxseed is for your heart, you'll need to watch your portion sizes. All foods can fit within the framework of a healthy eating plan -- it's just a matter of moderation and balance. Trackback(0)
