FitTip: Having Surgery? Don’t Eat Garlic Sometimes herbs and anesthetics don’t mix, so be sure to keep your doctor in the know.

Tell your physician about all of the herbal supplements you're taking, especially if you're scheduled for surgery. Many herbal products, such as garlic, gingko biloba and ginger, may cause adverse reactions with anesthetics. According to The Society of Anesthesiologists, certain herbal medicines may prolong the effects of anesthesia, while others may increase the risks of bleeding or raise blood pressure. Keep your physician informed so harmful reactions can be anticipated and prevented.
