Caffeine: How much is too much? Print E-mail

If you are like many people, you get up in the morning and head straight for the coffee maker. You need that jumpstart in the morning to get you going. As the day drags on you may have another cup, then a soda with lunch, ice tea with dinner, and the list goes on.

Before you know it you are dependent on the caffeine jolt to keep you going throughout the day. Is it too much?

"How much caffeine is too much really depends on your individual tolerance.", says New York Nutritionist Shira Isenberg RD. "The first sign of excess is often disrupted sleep patterns. So, if you find yourself caught in a vicious cycle of sleepless nights and drowsy days, it may be time to start cutting back."

Other potential side effects of a caffeine overdose may be elevated heart rate, nausea and vomiting, restlessness, anxiety, depression, or tremors. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor to determine if you're sensitive to caffeine.

If you're not experiencing any side effects, a little caffeine now and then isn't likely to harm your health. In fact, for most healthy adults, 200 to 300 mg a day (about 2 cups of coffee) should pose no physical problem. Use the following information to help determine if your caffeine consumption is in this moderate range.
