Q: I feel like I have no energy lately - is there a vitamin I should be taking to help?

A: Without downplaying the role vitamins play for good health, it is important to understand that simply taking vitamins is not enough to increase energy. Maintaining a high level of energy involves many factors including getting enough rest and eating regularly and healthfully.

The food we eat contains nutrients known as carbohydrate, protein and fat, which provide energy to our bodies and allows us to go about our normal daily activities. If you don't eat enough, your body will feel weak because it's not getting enough fuel.

Vitamins and minerals don't give your body energy directly, but they do HELP the carbohydrate, protein and fat get their job done to give you energy. If you take vitamins and minerals but don't eat, they're useless, because they won't have the other nutrients they need to work with. Think of the carbohydrate, protein and fat as gas for a car, and the vitamins and minerals are like the key that gets the car working.

Certainly, that is not to say that taking a multivitamin is not beneficial. However, before taking any type of over-the-counter or prescription pill, always check with your healthcare provider to determine what is appropriate for you. In addition, if your feeling of fatigue continues, it might be a good idea to check with your healthcare provider to rule out any other more serious causes.
