FitTip: A Little Sunshine Can Make You Feel Better Print E-mail

A few minutes of sunshine can put you in a better mood.

Taking a few minutes to soak up some sunshine can put you in a better mood, say psychologists. The sun can kick-start your day by increasing the brain's production of serotonin, a chemical that gives you a natural feeling of well-being. The sun also helps your body synthesize vitamin D, which in turn gives you energy, and inhibits the body's production of melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone.

So if you're feeling a little down in the dumps, head outside for a few moments of sunshine - 5 to 10 minutes should do the trick. Be sure not to catch too many rays, though. As everyone knows, excessive sun exposure can lead to, at best, premature aging of the skin and, at worst, deadly forms of skin cancer, not to mention the formation of cataracts in your eyes.

So catch a couple mood-lifting rays and spread the sunshine indoors.
