FitTip: Size Does Matter After All Print E-mail

Smaller meals will keep your metabolism revved.

The best way to keep your energy level up and your weight down is to eat a number of small meals throughout the day instead of three large ones at the customary times. The constant supply of food will keep your metabolism humming.

Whatever you do, don't skip meals-otherwise you'll be more likely to grab a sweet treat to help pick up your flagging energy. When you plan your meals, also be sure to stick with healthy portion sizes, which may be smaller than you think. For example, a three-ounce serving of meat, poultry or fish is about the width and height of a deck of cards-and that counts as one serving.

Also, to ensure you eat a heart-healthy diet, consider vegetables, fruit and whole grains as the main dish on your plate, and think of meat, poultry and pasta as side dishes.
