Do you commonly wake up in the middle of the night to eat? Do you have a poor appetite during the day? Have you been engaging in this behavior for 2 months or longer?

An occasional midnight snack is nothing to worry about; however, if you answered "yes" to all of the questions above you may be suffering from a disorder called "Night Eating Syndrome." Night Eating Syndrome is thought to affect only 2% of the general population; however, up to 27% of people with weight and obesity problems may be affected. Little is known about this affliction; causes are thought to be genetic, hormonal, or psychological or a combination of all of these factors.

If you or someone you know suffers from this condition, implementing some of the suggestions below may help reduce nighttime eating. Also seek the help of your doctor, mental health professional or a registered dietitian specializing in eating disorders.

Consume at least 3 well balanced meals throughout the day Do not skip meals or excessively restrict daytime calories Consider having a light snack before bed Avoid caffeinated beverages after lunch Avoid napping during the day Replace high-calorie / high-fat night snacks with lower calorie choices Avoid excess liquids before bedtime in an attempt to prevent waking up to use the bathroom Drink a glass of herbal tea or warm milk instead of eating late at night Replace night eating with other behaviors such as reading, watching TV, listening to music, etc.
