Working up a sweat isn’t the only way to shed those extra pounds. Learn the four ways to get your body to burn more calories while you’re just standing still.
It may not feel very strenuous, but you're burning a few calories right now just reading this sentence. What many people forget is that our bodies are in a perpetual need of calories just to stay functioning properly.
That number of calories differs depending on whatever situations you place your body in throughout the day. These four steps can help you boost your metabolism (the pace at which your body burns calories) so you rev at a higher speed, even when you're just standing still.
Step #1 (Morning)
Make sure you have a hearty breakfast. Starving yourself with a light meal early in the day will only make you hungrier as the day lingers on, causing you to eat the remainder of your calories in the evening. Eating most of your calories early in the day not only increases your metabolic rate but also gives you the rest of the day to burn those calories off. Studies have proven that most overweight people consume 60 to 75 percent of their calories at night, when the body's metabolism begins to slow down.
Step #2 (Afternoon)
Don't be afraid to snack. Feeding your body small, low-fat snacks throughout the day helps to stabilize blood-sugar levels, which may help the body burn fat and calories more efficiently.
Step #3 (Night)
Save your workouts for nighttime. Studies have shown that exercising revs up the body's metabolism for more than an hour afterward. By leaving your exercise plans for the evening, you can boost your metabolism during a time when it's typically slowing itself down to prepare for sleep. The result is a body that has no choice but to burn more calories as it sleeps to refuel spent muscles.
Step #4 (Night, Part Two)
If you're going to exercise, make sure you're also lifting weights. The more muscle you have on your frame, the more calories your body has to spend to maintain it. Your system burns up to an extra 50 calories each day for every gained pound of muscle.
