FitTip: Why It's Okay to Snack at Night Print E-mail

What to forage for in your late-night fridge.

Despite the pervasive myth that snacking after dinner causes weight gain, you don't need to deprive yourself of nighttime munchies. Still, while putting a padlock on your refrigerator after nine o'clock isn't necessary, that doesn't mean you have carte blanche to devour a pint of ice cream.

To make smart p.m.  snack choices, keep your bites light-under 200 calories is fine, say diet experts. What makes a sensible treat? A small bowl of cereal or some fresh, frozen or canned fruit with cottage cheese are satisfying, slightly sweet and will help you meet your calcium needs for the day.

As long as you remember that moderation is key, you can indulge before bed without having to wake up feeling guilty and bloated the next morning.
