FitTip: Weigh Yourself Once a Week Print E-mail

Don't freak out: your weight can fluctuate throughout the day.

Don't throw your scale out the window in frustration if it says you've gained a few pounds in just one day, because it may be telling the truth. It's normal for your weight to fluctuate a few pounds every day for a variety of reasons.

For one thing, what you're eating can make a dramatic short-term difference.

Foods that are high in sodium can cause water retention, which is often the culprit when a few unexpected pounds register on the scale.

Also, if you weigh yourself immediately after a big meal, you could weigh up to five pounds more than you did before you sat down at the table.

The solution: Check the scale less frequently so you don't drive yourself mad over a fluctuation of a few pounds. Diet experts recommend weighing in no more than once a week.

If you're exercising regularly and keeping your diet in check, your weight shouldn't fluctuate enough to cause you concern.
