Deceiving Foods Print E-mail

Watch out for foods you think are healthy! You're not always getting what you think...

Your stomach is rumbling and your body is craving chocolate. You grab some yogurt-covered pretzels thinking that you are sticking to your diet. Wrong! Although yogurt-covered pretzels may appear to be healthy--they are sold at health food stores--they are deceivingly high in both calories and fat.

Remember that just because something is sold at a health food store doesn't mean that it is dietetic.

Here is a list of some snacks to be wary of:

Granola: Granola, made with whole grain oats and dried fruit may contain 20 grams of fat, and much of that fat may be saturated fat.

Power Bars:  Power bars are designed to replace energy lost during exercise and are usually high in calories. Therefore, while power bars may be a good snack to eat after a workout they might not be appropriate for a midday snack.

Carob Bars: Carob bars are high in calories. One carob bar can contain approximately 600 calories.

Chex mix: The Chex mix that is sold at the stores is high in fat, calories, and sodium. Reeves recommends making your own Chex mix at home using whole grain or bran chex.

Banana chips, apple chips, dried sweetened fruits: Banana chips are like potato chips because they are fried. Any dried sweetened fruits are high in calories because of the added sugar.
