Q: I am a total chocoholic and have been hearing more and more that
chocolate is good for you. Tell me the truth - can I enjoy it
guilt-free? A: You are not alone! There has been lots of media attention paid to chocolate in recent months and the information can be confusing and conflicting. While it is true that chocolate contains compounds known as polyphenols, which are under investigation for potential health benefits, chocolate is far from a "health" food. It is typically high in calories, saturated fat and sugar. However, it can be part of a healthy diet when eaten in moderation. Chocolate has long been considered a "forbidden" food for those trying to lose weight. But for confessed chocoholics, avoiding it all together may not be realistic or necessary. By choosing a variety of foods and sticking to a low fat, high fiber diet, you can afford to indulge once in a while if you keep the portions small and reduce the fat in other areas of your diet. Buy chocolate in individual servings such as Hershey's kisses or bite size candy bars. Choose lower calorie treats to satisfy your cravings - think tootsie rolls, peppermint patties, low fat chocolate milk or hot chocolate made with skim milk. Trackback(0)
