Q: I have been trying to lose weight by sticking to a reduced calorie, well-balanced meal plan. Once in a while I eat too much - will this cause me to gain back what I have lost?

A: One day won't make or break you. It's consistent overeating that you need to worry about. You will not see the scale go up after one day of going overboard. A pound is equal to 3500 calories.

This means that you have to eat 3500 calories more than your body needs in order to gain a pound. It would be pretty hard to do this in one day unless you really went on a huge binge. Consistent overeating over the course of a few days or weeks, however, will result in the accumulation of 3500 calories, which will cause you to gain a pound.
