Q: I have made a commitment to lose weight, and so far I am doing well. The hardest part of the day is the evening, when I often find myself visiting the refrigerator. Any tips?

A: Snacking in the evening is a common problem.

Have you stopped and asked yourself "Am I really hungry?" Often times, with our busy schedules, the evening is the first time all day that we really get a chance to relax...and with that comes snacking. The first thing to do to combat this problem is to eat regularly throughout the day. Choose balanced meals and snacks to keep your blood sugar stable. In addition, you will not end up with a calorie deficit at night and won't feel starved from skipped meals.

If it's actual hunger you're feeling after dinner, plan for a balanced snack. Some good ideas include an apple with peanut butter or low fat cheese, half a sandwich or a bowl of cereal with skim milk.

If, on the other hand, you are eating out of boredom, stress, or other emotion - consider the tips below:

Close the kitchen. What does that mean? After your last meal or snack, take a glass of water with you and consider the kitchen closed for the night. This may seem silly, but it really can help.

Brush your teeth. Many people find that once they have brushed their teeth they are hesitant to eat again, since that means you will have to re-brush. Plus the fresh feeling in your mouth is a deterrent to eating.

Find alternative activities to enjoy. Leave a puzzle out on the dining room table to work on, tackle a household project or read a magazine. Consider this your time, a reward for all of your hard work.
