Q: I really enjoy having a snack before I go to bed. Is it true that this is preventing me from losing weight?

A:
WHEN you eat your meals has less of an effect on your weight than WHAT you eat. When trying to lose weight, your total calorie intake is what counts, regardless of what time you eat those calories. Eating late at night will not automatically cause you to gain weight. However, making sure that you choose wisely will ensure that you curb nighttime hunger without ruining all of your hard work during the day.

When deciding on a bedtime snack, choose one that is balanced and will leave you feeling satisfied such as high fiber cereal with skim milk, low fat cheese and fruit, or low fat yogurt with fruit or granola. Avoid very sugary or fatty foods, since they are chock-full of calories and offer little nutritional value. For added measure, enjoy your snack on a plate so you can accurately judge the portion size - snacking right out of the bag or box can lead to mindless munching.
