Q: High cholesterol runs in my family, so I have been trying to
watch my diet lately. I buy foods that say "cholesterol free" on the
package - is that enough?
A: When you're watching your cholesterol levels, it's also important to pay attention to saturated fat. Foods high in saturated fat play a role in raising cholesterol levels - even more so than cholesterol-laden foods such as egg yolks, liver, and shrimp. So, although something like shrimp contains a considerable amount of cholesterol, it has substantially less total fat and saturated fat than steak -- making the shrimp a better choice.Also remember that items that claim to be cholesterol free are not necessarily low in saturated fat, so always check the food label to get the whole picture. The American Heart Association recommends that calories from saturated fat should not exceed 10% of your entire daily intake. Foods high in saturated fat include those from animal sources such as butter, lard, meat, poultry with skin, and whole milk dairy products (cheese, milk, and ice cream). Trackback(0)
