Q&A: Exercise Anytime! Print E-mail

Q: When is the best time for me to exercise?

A: When it comes to exercise, everyone is different. Some people prefer a walk and a bath as a nightcap, while others find that noontime workouts free them from finding a sitter for the kids. Developing an exercise schedule that works for you is what will ultimately keep you active.

As far as making exercise a habit, however, science is on the side of the early birds. People who work out in the mornings are much more likely to stick to their programs than those who leave it until later -- when spur-of-the-moment meetings or family responsibilities can knock the best intentions off balance. In addition, AM workouts can give your day an added jumpstart. PM workouts, on the other hand, may interfere with sleep if done too late in the evening.

If you are having trouble finding the time to workout, break up your exercise into smaller segments such as 10 minutes of activity in the morning, afternoon, and evening to add up to a larger amount of activity throughout the day. Regardless of what time of day you exercise, you will still gain all the lasting health benefits that exercise provides.
