Q&A: Artificial Weight Loss? Print E-mail

Q: I've heard artificial sweeteners can help me lose weight. Is this true?

A: Artificial sweeteners are calorie free and used to replace sugar in foods. Foods sweetened with non-caloric sweeteners (instead of natural sugar) do often contain fewer calories per serving.

However, these products themselves do not single-handedly produce weight loss; a total decrease in calorie intake each day is what will help you lose weight and keep it off.

Additionally, while the research is inconclusive, some studies have shown that those who "save" calories by regularly consuming items containing artificial sweetener end up taking in those calories somewhere else. Other studies have suggested that artificial sweeteners may contribute to hunger - ironic, huh? Research aside, the bottom line is that both artificial sweeteners as well as regular sugar can be part of a healthy, balanced diet. As always, the key is moderation.
