Thanks to new designs that combine function and fashion, there’s no reason you can’t protect your head and look stylish.

Forget the image of the ugly bike helmets from 15 years back. Thanks to new designs that combine function and fashion, there's no reason you can't protect your head and look stylish. However, before you buy that smart-looking helmet you've been eyeing, you need to know if it offers the four essential features that will safeguard your noggin in a crash.

1. First and foremost, make sure the helmet is approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or the Snell Memorial Foundation, which are official safety-testing organizations.  In general, a quality helmet should cost between $50 and $100.

2. The helmet should have adjustable straps. Look for one with a strap system that not only goes under the chin but also cradles the back of your head for extra support and stability. The helmet should be snug, but not supertight.

3. It can get pretty hot under a helmet, so choose one with vents and tunnels designed to keep you cool. The more vents the better.

4. How you wear your helmet can be just as important as what type of helmet you buy.  80 percent of injuries take place on the front of the head because many people wear their helmets tilted back. This is dangerous because people often pitch forward when they crash. Keeping it low on your forehead can help reduce your risk of injury.
