Staying Slim: Child's Play? Print E-mail

I’ve probably said this before, but I think Jessica Biel might have the best body in Hollywood . She’s the pinnacle of fitness, but her body still seems attainable. She’s shared a stylist with Nicole Richie but has never sparked a single anorexia rumor. And men’s mags have been ranking her among the sexiest celebs ever since it was legal to include her on that list. So how does she keep her figure without all the usual ups and downs?

Basically, it’s second nature. Jessica grew up in Colorado , where it was the norm to get outdoors and play. (In fact, Colorado recently ranked tops among states with the lowest obesity rates.) "We didn't really have video games or watch TV," she says. "My brother and I spent all of our time outside—playing soccer, doing gymnastics, skiing, snowboarding. So for me, being athletic and active is a way of life."

But for most people, working out isn’t a way of life—more like a chore or an inconvenience. After all, there’s nothing overly enjoyable about plodding away on a treadmill at the gym while watching close-captioned CNN on the overhead monitors. But working out can actually be fun. Instead of jogging on the treadmill for a half-hour, play a half-hour game of tennis with a friend and burn the same number of calories. Instead of watching a movie or going to a bar, work fitness into your social life—join a softball team, dance at a club, go for a hike. It’s easier to stick to a fitness routine when it’s not...well, too routine. Although it never hurts to have Justin Timberlake as your running buddy, either.
