Hot Mamas? Print E-mail
by Kara Wahlgren
Monday, 21 July 2008

Jessica Alba stirred up some controversy recently for her blunt synopsis of being pregnant: "I never felt less sexy. I mean, I wouldn't have changed it for the world...but I wanted to get rid of all the weight." So shallow, right? Well, maybe not.

My first instinct was to rail against her for being superficial. After all, pregnant women can be sexy—just ask Gwen Stefani. And plenty of preggo celebs actually appreciate that big ol’ belly. Take Halle   Berry , who said, "I feel more sexy now than I’ve ever felt—really, truly, sexy." Besides, in the grand scheme of things, whining about a little weight gain just seems petty.

Then again, that’s easy for me to say. So I asked a few friends who have been with bun in oven, and they actually thought both girls were right: Yes, there’s something inherently sexy about the whole miracle-of-life thing. And yes, there’s something inherently unsexy about nonstop nausea, cankles, and maternity bras.

So maybe Jessica does deserve some props for her honesty. What do you think?

I think its great that she didn't romanticize the process of giving a little human being life. Yes, its a blessed thing, but its not all sunshine and roses. And thank God someone is being honest about it.

Darkness at Noon
by Judith J. Wurtman, Ph.D.
Sunday, 30 November 2008

Barrow, Alaska, saw the last of the sun a few days ago. It won’t return until January 23rd.  When I read that in the newspaper, I tried to imagine what it would be like to go through the entire day in darkness, day after day. It was depressing simply to contemplate the possibility. And depression is exactly what many people feel as the hours of daylight shrink in the lower 48 and darkness takes over more and more of our waking time.
