ERIN O’BRIEN has been working as an exercise specialist for the past 15 years in elite fitness clubs in both New York City and Los Angeles. (Crunch Fitness International, Equinox Fitness, Sports Club LA).  She is certified through AFFA (Group Exercise and Pre/Postnatal), and The Fitness Institute of Training (Personal Trainer) as well as having completed Pilates Mat and Reformer training (Polestar). She became certified for Pre/Post Natal, Post Rehab, and Flexibility Training, through Esquerre Fitness Group. She received the Bally’s Elite Fitness Trainer Award from Crunch in 2003, and  also holds certifications in Urban Rebounding, and Jonny G’s Spinning. She developed and designed her own line of exercise DVDs including PRENATAL FITNESS FIX, POSTNATAL RESCUE, and STRONG BODY, AGELESS BODY(Acacialifestyle.com), as well as developing the Cardio Resistance program for VERSASTICK. She received her Master of Fine Arts at New York University and her Bachelor of Fine Arts at The University of Minnesota – Duluth. Erin is a proud mother of two children, and resides in Los Angeles with her husband James Denton.

Diet Detective: Hey Erin, thanks again for agreeing to answer several questions for our readers. I’m wondering, what inspired your fitness passion? 

Erin: I owe it all to my parents – they were and still are very active and had us playing sports our entire lives. I have 4 sisters, and both my parents were coaches for our teams as well as being our biggest supporters. I think as a child when you see how important fitness and sports are to your folks, you naturally consider it an important part of your life -

Diet Detective: You’ve become a real expert in pre and post pregnancy fitness – aside from having children yourself – was there another trigger or driving force? 

Erin: As I was working as a personal trainer in Los Angeles and New York, I found most trainers were afraid of training pregnant women – so I decided to get educated in pre/post natal fitness. My business exploded because the gyms would send all the pregnant ladies to me.

Diet Detective:  Best advice for new moms wanting to get back in shape FAST?

Erin: Schedule your workouts like you do your kid’s Dr. appointments. Too often we have good intentions, but then as the day progresses, Mommy’s workout always seems to be last on the “to do” list. I say in my DVD, ” Just do something, TODAY.”

Diet Detective: Tell us about your latest DVD project?

Erin: It is called, “Strong Body, Ageless Body” and it’s a full body sculpting workout – very similar to what I teach for Equinox Fitness Clubs in Los Angeles.

Diet Detective: Where you’re most inspired?

Erin: I get all of my good ideas and choreography when I’m jogging in my neighborhood.

Diet Detective: Where you like to do your workouts?

Erin: I prefer to workout in a gym…um, a CLEAN gym.

Diet Detective: You’re Favorite core exercise?  How do you do it?

Erin: I really enjoy working my core on the Bosu ball. I was very fortunate to have trained with Keli Roberts for a while, and she made me do full range of motion abs on the Bosu. It killed me!

Diet Detective: Best flexibility exercise? How do you do it?

Erin: I love “Downward Facing Dog” in Yoga. It feels so good on my calves, hamstrings, lats, shoulders, and lower back. If I haven’t done Yoga in a while, it’s excruciating.

Diet Detective: Best strength training exercise? How do you do it?

Erin: I love doing unilateral pec flys. You lie on your back with your feet off the ground and fly one arm at a time without rolling off your center. It’s a great way to work your abs as well.

Diet Detective: Worst strength training exercise?

Erin: Push ups. I hate them.

Diet Detective: Your typically day?

Erin: Jamie (my husband ) and I usually get up with the kids around 6am. We have  a relaxing morning with the LA Times and a cup of coffee, then it’s off to our various activities, I usually teach in the morning, and if not, I’ll either go to the gym or go for a run. Then I’m taking my kids to a class or a play date – in the afternoon we go for a swim and then while I’m making supper Jamie usually takes the kids out in the back yard and plays baseball or pushes them on the swings. After dinner, it’s bath, books and bedtime. Jamie and I will stay up and watch the Dodgers, or something on TV (Desperate Housewives)

Diet Detective: What’s in your refrigerator right now?

Erin: Hmm… Organic milk, lots of fresh veggies, eggs, meat (we’re big meat eaters), cheese, Dr. Organics Body Shot (a great vitamin boost)

Diet Detective: Okay now a few very quick one word or one sentence answer – pick only one of the choices please. (fyi: also, “depends” is NOT an answer – I’m  looking for a real commitment here. )

-          Yoga vs. Pilates vs. Stretching? Pilates for sure

-          Free weights vs. Machine? Free weights

-          Cardio vs. Strength Training vs. Flexibility/Core Work? I prefer to do it all at once.

-          Swiss ball/ Physio Ball vs. Exercise Bands

-          Swiss ball

-          Treadmill vs. Walking Outdoors

-          Walking outdoors!

Diet Detective: Your favorite “junk food?”

Erin: Chips and Salsa

Diet Detective: Your favorite healthy breakfast?

Erin: Eggs with whole grain toast

Diet Detective: Which historical figure can you relate to most?

Erin: Nadia Comaneci was a true inspiration to me.

Diet Detective: Who’s your hero?

Erin: My Grandma Bernin. She scrubbed floors for a living and was the most extraordinary woman I’ve ever met.

Diet Detective: Your worst summer job?

Erin: Picking up trash at Valley Fair Amusement Park in Shakopee, MN

Diet Detective: What’s your motto?

Erin: “Helping Women Define Themselves”

Diet Detective: As a child you wanted to be:

Erin: Really good at sports. Unfortunately, I stopped growing at 5 feet, so by the time I was in high school, I wasn’t very good.

Walking to Get Somewhere

A town near where I live has decided that kids should start walking to school. Houses are close together, there are sidewalks, school crossing guards and now walking (not car) pools. Neighborhood Moms organize themselves into morning and afternoon walkers, taking turns escorting a group of neighborhood children to school. Everyone seems happy. The town officials are gleeful at the money saved by not using buses, the moms are busy telling their offspring how they, the parents, walked miles in blizzards uphill  to get to school, and the school nurse is sure the kids will become more fit. And the kids will learn the joys of kicking piles of leaves, stomping through puddles, and throwing snowballs on the way to and from school.

1908 Ford Model T vs. 2008 Ford Pick-Up

On October 1st, 2008, the Ford Model-T turned 100-years-old. Back in 1908, the year my grandmother was born, this "universal car" as Henry Ford called it, became the first mass-produced car and the symbol of low-cost reliable transportation. But more important than it's centenial, the Model T got 13-21 MPG (max speed 45 MPH), and it was the first flexible-fuel vehicle, running on gas, ethanol or both. According to Model T collector Stu Chaney of the Model T Ford Club of America who appeared on the The CBS Satuday Early Show, "It will run on moonshine, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel-- about anything you can put a match to. And, whatever it runs on, it would pass today's very strict emission standards, because it burns the complete charge in the combustion."

The Yo-Yo Diet

The term "Yo-Yo Dieting" was coined by Dr. Kelly Brownell at Yale University in reference to the cyclical up-down motion of a yo-yo with regards to body weight. The dieter is initially successful in the pursuit of weight loss but is unsuccessful in maintaining the loss for the long-term. The dieter then seeks to lose the regained weight, and the cycle begins again.

I am no stranger to the phenomenon. At 13, prior to my Bar Mitzvah, I lost 23 pounds in 21 days to fit into my suit. I gained 40 pounds within the following two weeks.

Q&A with Liz Edmunds (The Food Nanny)

Liz Edmunds’ passion for the importance of family dinnertime led a kitchen-store manager to dub her “the food nanny.” The moniker stuck! Today Liz serves as part teacher, part counselor, part coach for families in need of organizational help and cooking instruction so they can implement a weekly dinner plan in their own homes.

When Liz and her husband, Stephen Edmunds, started having children, Liz set a goal to create a consistent dinnertime with the family, despite her husband’s extensive travels as a pilot, first for the U.S. Air Force and then for Delta Airlines. She began implementing her “theme nights” more than 30 years ago and has been developing and tweaking recipes ever since.

Over the years Liz has shared her theme-night plan with people all over the country, and many have encouraged her to write a book. Some of Liz’s four daughters used the plan in college to cook for their roommates and friends; and now that the daughters are married, they are following the plan with their own families.
