Calorie Bargain: EatSmart Nutrition Scale
The Why: We were a bit skeptical about the purpose of the scale and whether it was really different than other food scales on the market. Plus, it seemed complicated. And to add to our skepticism, one of the company’s founders called us every day to get us to write about it. In spite of all that, we still liked it. The scale instantly calculates the exact values for 12 major nutrients contained in any size portion of hundreds of different foods Along with the scale you get a book that provides a code for each food. Then you simply plug in the code and the scale gives you the actual nutrients for the specific portion of that food you are about to eat—not an abstract, generic "serving size.”
The Health Bonus: The scale calculates the following nutrients: Calories / Carbohydrates / Fiber Sodium / Potassium / Magnesium / Total Fat / Saturated Fat / Cholesterol Calcium / Protein / Vitamin K
What We Liked Best: It’s easy to use and provides good information.
What We Liked Least: It’s a bit pricey, and you really have to be conscientious and weigh your food consistently—not everyone will do that. There’s a good chance (even with the best intentions) that the scale might just be a dust collector.
What It Replaces: Guessing about the number of calories you’re consuming.
The Price: $75
Where to Buy: From the company website www.eatsmartproducts.com or Amazon.com
Ingredients: The scale has two operating modes. Database: the internal database stores nutritional values for approximately 1,000 whole foods, including most fruits, vegetables, meats and other fresh foods. EatSmart Nutrition Facts Calculator: a proprietary algorithm allows you to calculate nutrients for any food with a USDA Nutrition Facts label.
