Actresses don’t eat a lot—no big surprise there. But it’s always a little surprising when one of them actually admits it.

In the June issue of SELF, Liv Tyler says, “I once read a great comment from Julianne Moore, who said that actresses are hungry all the time. I thought that was really brave and funny, because so many women are like, ‘Yeah, the weight just rolled off me after I had my baby, and I eat like a pig.’ And then you meet them, and they don’t eat like a pig!”

Yeah, no kidding.

FYI, Julianne’s quote was, “I think I’m a slender person, but the industry apparently doesn’t. All actresses are hungry all the time, I think.”

That’s probably pretty close to the truth. Take Liv, who made headlines for her dramatic slimdown last year—then dropped an extra 5-10 pounds for her role in this summer’s The Hulk. Say she had a month to get into action-heroine-worthy shape. She’d need to lose two pounds a week, which would mean cutting 1,000 calories from her daily intake or burning that number at the gym.

Translation: Either she cuts her daily intake to about 1200 calories, or she’ll need to jog 10 miles on the treadmill. That’s a half-marathon every daySince she likes to indulge in the occasional cheeseburger or Chinese takeout, Liv opts for burning calories rather than cutting ’em. “If you want to be really skinny, then you have to exercise a lot,” she says. “If you want to lose weight, then you have to burn more calories than you consume, in a healthy way, which is tricky.”

keep in mind they don't always tell the truth

I was lucky enough to have spent a few days on the set of CSI back when it was a brand new show. The then unknown actress, Jorja Fox who plays Sara on CSI didn't have a thing to eat all day long and took a smoke break between every scene.
I noticed a few years later that Self Magazine had interviewed her about how she stayed so slim, trim and healthy. Of course, she said she ate a well balanced diet and exercised. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn't? All I know is that what it looked like to me is that she didn't eat and smoked, possibly to help with the hunger pains. It also could be that this was a big break for her and she was nervous. Sometimes nerves can make you lose your appetite and want to smoke instead! Who knows- she is a great actress and I was only there for two days- its not like I know her every move. I just felt a bit misled when I saw one thing and read another.
Comforting to know some celebs are human

I read the Liv Tyler article this morning. While it is comforting to know that some celebs struggle with their weight as I do, I still get jealous that they have the time and the money to devout to health and fitness. Money isn't everything, but it makes it possible for a celeb to hire the best nannies to watch their kids, hire the best trainer to tone their tush, hire the best nutritionist to scold them for eating that bagel and most of all, having money allows them to take the time off to work on it all. The rest of us work 40 plus hours a week, keep house and look after our families without any of the celeb benefits. Yet for some stupid reason we think we, the normal people, should look like the bobble heads we see in celeb magazines. I love Liv Tyler's attitude about just enjoying life and eating that cheeseburger if you want to. But then again she knows that if she needs to lose some weight, she'll have all the help and time required to get in supermodel shape.

Sometimes I don’t even think we realize just how brilliant the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins really was for espousing what he did during his amazing career. Sure, low-carb diets had been out there in the public eye for over a century (most notably from William Banting in 1864 with his Letter On Corpulence) before he came along. But it was the charisma and enthusiasm for the low-carb lifestyle that Dr. Atkins brought to the public arena that captured the attention of millions of people worldwide who were interested in learning more about how low-carb could help them shed the pounds and restore their good health.

Hey NIH, Lower Blood Sugar In Diabetics Is A GOOD Thing!

We all know how incompetent many of the government and leading health organizations are in the United States as it relates to providing information to the public about taking care of themselves to protect against disease and death. We’ve seen it with the failed low-fat, low-calorie diets they’ve been pushing on the American people for decades with no positive impact whatsoever and yet they continue to promote it as the only way to control obesity and health. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result, then I do believe we can officially describe those in charge of health policy in America as INSANE!

Forgetful? Exercise Can Keep Memory Sharp

(Source: American Medical Association. JAMA) Adults with memory problems who participated in a home-based physical activity program experienced a modest improvement in cognitive function, compared to those who did not participate in the program, according to a study in the September 3 issue of JAMA.

As the world population ages, the number of older adults living with Alzheimer disease (AD) is estimated to increase from the current 26.6 million to 106.2 million by 2050. "If illness onset could be delayed by 12 months, 9.2 million fewer cases of AD would occur worldwide. For this reason, attempts have been made to identify individuals who are at increased risk of AD and to test interventions that might delay the progression of prodromal symptoms [early non-specific symptom, or set of symptoms] to full-blown dementia," the authors write.

Q&A with Eric Cressey
