From The Wall Street Journal: A lifestyle that includes a "little more exercise" could make medical costs less of an issue for future retirees, according to a recent report from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. The problem: Some people apparently don't know the meaning of a "little." In a bid to stave off the effects of aging -- and under the theory that more is always better -- many adults age 50-plus are taking their fitness workouts to the extreme. As a result, they are stressing their joints, straining their backs and landing in the one spot they hope to avoid: the doctor's office. "Activity and exercise are the closest thing to the fountain of youth that we have," says Nicholas DiNubile, an orthopedic surgeon and consulting physician to the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and the Pennsylvania Ballet. But ailments tied to muscles and bones have surpassed the common cold as the No. 1 reason for physician visits in the U.S., he says. Trackback(0)
