Is it possible to squeeze in exercise without really exercising?

Kristen Bell—one of the few starlets who’s never been accused of being either too skinny or too fat—says her fab figure stems from a resolution she made five years ago to always take the stairs. No escalators, no elevators, no ramps, no jet-packs.

I’m tempted to brush this off as another truth-fudging celeb fitness tip. But I won’t. For starters, Kristen owns up to the fact that she supplements her habitual stair-climbing with regular yoga and weight-training sessions. And moreover, there’s something to be said for automatic exercise—the kind you get just by not being lazy.

Case in point: Yesterday I got stuck behind a woman who was jockeying for a prime parking spot. In the two minutes she waited for the spot’s occupant to clear out, she could have easily parked in a farther spot and hoofed it across the parking lot. Maybe twice. Oh, and the clincher? We were at the gym.

Maybe Kristen’s on to something.
