You've probably heard of essential fatty acids (EFAs) or seen them graze the pages of certain publications.  But what are they and why do we need them? EFAs, also known as omega -3s and -6s, are polyunsaturated fats that cannot be produced by the body so we must get them from our food.  Studies have shown that EFAs can be a helpful weapon against coronary disease, Alzheimer's disease, acne, IBS, diabetes, breast cancer, and depression.
Yikes!  So let's get to the good stuff...  How can you get your recommended daily amount? Luckily for you, EFAs are found in many nooks and crannies in the food industry these days. You can get a generous amount in fish oils but flaxseed oil contains twice as much!  Pumpkin seeds are a yummy snack while giving you a rich dosage of your vital EFAs.  Incorporating grains and green leafy vegetables into your diet just add to your daily intake of your omegas.  Try making a salad with dark leafy greens instead of romaine lettuce. Now add some pumpkin seeds on top of a plethora of other veggies. Switch out your olive oil with flaxseed oil to give your dressing that extra boost of goodness.  Your colorful salad is now the Trojan horse for Alzheimer's and diabetes!
