J-Love Fires Back Print E-mail

So Jennifer Love Hewitt spent the past week celebrating her engagement in Hawaii , while a bunch of writers spent the past week coming up with super-witty ways to describe her cellulite.

Here are a few of the standouts:

  • “What the hell are those ghosts whispering to her? That cake fights cancer?”
  • “We know what you ate this summer, Love—everything!”
  • “I wonder if Ross gave her a pear-shaped diamond to match her pear-shaped body.”
  • “All things considered, she’s still a very fine looking woman, with a giant ass.”

Clever. I especially like the movie-title puns. But in all seriousness—that’s just a sample platter of the feedback Love’s been getting for gaining a few pounds. Hmm, so why is everyone in Hollywood so obsessed with being skinny?

Love fired back on her blog, saying, “I’m not upset for me, but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image. A size 2 is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size 0 doesn’t make you beautiful...like all women out there should, I love my body. To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini—put it on and stay strong.”

Some outlets immediately zoned in on her “size 2” remark, saying no way is Love a size two. But it’s worth noting that a) she only looks “fat” compared to size 00 celebs, and b) it’s really irrelevant. The point is that someone with an ounce of cellulite should be allowed to wear a bikini in public without getting slammed for it. (Besides, wasn’t the hourglass considered “ideal” not too long ago? I’m willing to bet Marilyn had a dimple or two.)

Thank you, JLH! How sad is our world when gaining a couple pounds and wearing a bikini requires an official statement of justification?

And thanks for this blog. I am an athletic, healthy person with no weight issue whatsoever, but the stick-thin Hollywood mentality gets in my head and brainwashes me just as much as it does anyone else. Coming to this blog once or twice a week and reading your perspective of Hollywood's follies gives me a better mindset and wakes me up when I get too mired in image. Thanks for that!
