Believe it or not, someone on Canada’s Next Top Model was anorexic. Yep, you heard it right—on a show about stick-skinny women competing for the chance to be human clothes hangers, not everyone was entirely healthy. This isn’t exactly the bombshell some tabs are making it out to be. I mean, let’s think about this for a second. I think it can be best summed up in Keenyah’s sobbing affirmation after being kicked off the stateside version two years ago: “Nothing will hold me back. Unless I get fatter.”
What is interesting is that Andrea Muizelaar doesn’t just admit to her eating disorder—she calls out the hypocrisy of the contest. She hints that Tyra picks the occasional plus-sized girl for the sake of image: “Has any of them ever won yet? Or come close?” And she says her aspirations made an easy alibi for her disorder: “
I knew modeling was all about thin and not regular people.” Normally that would sound like sour grapes, except Andrea won. Yep, even though the judges lambasted her every week for skipping meals and losing too much weight, they ultimately gave her the stamp of approval. Andrea says, “They all knew that I had an eating disorder, as I barely ate...they obviously did not care, as I ended up winning the show.” Tyra once said that her show proves that “models aren't shells, that they're true people with feelings and emotions and pasts and insecurities.” Of course—because when it comes to modeling, everyone knows it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Right? It’s a great sound byte, but if Andrea had been on ANTM, I somehow doubt that Tyra would have sent her packing. Trackback(0)
