Q: "Salmon has health benefits such as Omega 3s...but can someone please inform me whether or not we sacrifice a material amount of Omega 3 benefits when we buy farmed salmon?  We generally purchase farmed salmon because it is half the price of wild salmon, and we assume wild salmon has all the promised omega 3s and other health benefits.  THX" ~fiftysixandcool

A: Excellent question!

There are many varieties of salmon and all contain different amounts of omega 3 fatty acids.  Generally, farmed salmon do have a higher content of omega 3 fatty acids when compared to wild, however when selecting fish (salmon in particular), there's more to consider than just the omega 3 fatty acid content - there's mercury levels, amounts of pesticide, as well as environmental and economical concerns.  Here's a great article to help you decide which type of salmon is best for you to purchase.

Also be aware that the DietDetective.com Food Search Tool, found under Healthy Living Tools on the left side of the Diet Detective site, lists the amount of omega 3 fatty acids found in foods.

Mercury in salmon
written by scott, April 23, 2008
The USDA reports salmon to contain amongst the lowest amounts of mercury of all fin fish. It does, however, contain organochlorines. You do no service to readers raising the mercury question for salmon and equate it with other pollutants. They are not anywhere near equivalent.
