Sick...or Just Sick? Print E-mail

You’ve probably seen the scary-skinny photo of Joely Richardson by now. (If not, click here.) This is the kind of skin-and-bones photo that a celeb can’t brush off without an explanation. In Joely’s case, she blames a series of medical snafus and says she’s still at a healthy weight. Wow, really?

Because the picture seems to suggest otherwise. But Joely insists, “I took a bad picture, but believe me, there is absolutely nothing wrong with me. I had terrible flu combined with a hernia operation that really took it out of me.” But despite the laundry list of medical causes, she doesn’t think her weight loss is anything to worry about: “I’ve been following a very good diet and that’s caused me to lose weight naturally.” Wait, what happened to the flu excuse we were using two sentences ago?

True, the flu is a foolproof weight loss method of sort—mostly because the effort involved in microwaving a bowl of chicken soup can kind of feel like you’re running an Ironman. But usually a little regain is the first sign that you’re springing back. Joely seems to have missed that step.

Ironically, the flu had a very different effect on another actress. A few years ago, Courtney Thorne-Smith was dabbling in compulsive exercise (a nasty side effect of standing next to Calista Flockhart all day). At the time, she said a major wake-up call came when she lost 10 pounds from a nasty illness—and got complimented on her fab new physique. So much for “it’s what’s on the inside that counts,” huh?
